Session 3-Sustainability in Quality

Mr. P. Kaniappan

Profile

Mr. P. Kaniappan,

Head, Counselling and Assessment, IFQM

His underscored that sustainability in quality is not a one-time initiative but a continuous journey — one that demands the integration of technology, process discipline, and above all, leadership commitment. He emphasized that true resilience emerges when organizations align innovation with environmental and social responsibility.

His focus on systems thinking, circularity, and the need to embed sustainability into design, manufacturing, and supply chains was particularly relevant in today’s rapidly changing industrial landscape. By contextualizing global mobility challenges within India’s framework, he outlined a clear roadmap for balancing growth, safety, and environmental stewardship.

During the interactive Q&A, Mr. Kaniappan highlighted that quality leadership is about building ecosystems — where suppliers, partners, and people share a unified commitment to sustainability. He urged organizations to view sustainability not as a compliance requirement but as a strategic differentiator that creates long-term value.

His message resonated strongly with the audience — that resilient organizations are those that innovate responsibly, practice sustainability consistently, and lead by example.

Mr. S. Harikrishna

Profile

Mr. S. Harikrishna

DD – Safety, Reliability and Quality Area, Human Space Flight Centre

His reflections illuminated the unique journey of ISRO and the principles that make sustained quality possible in a high-stakes environment. He highlighted how visionary leadership, ignited minds, and teamwork have transformed challenges into remarkable achievements — from the humble pencil rocket days to today’s complex launch vehicles and spacecraft systems.

His insights into the role of composites, non-destructive testing, and the critical importance of managing interfaces offered the audience a rare glimpse into the “quality behind the quality” of space missions. The analogy he drew from launch vehicles — shedding dead weight to progress — powerfully illustrated how organizations, too, must let go of outdated practices to move forward.

During the interactive Q&A, Mr. Harikrishna emphasized that quality in aerospace is not merely technical but deeply people-centric — grounded in inspired leadership, meticulous processes, and continuous learning. He underscored how customization, innovation, and indigenous solutions are central to India’s continued success in space exploration.

His talk vividly captured how resilience and sustainability go hand in hand in pushing the frontiers of science and technology, always with society’s advancement at heart.

Mr. S.P. Joshi

Profile

Mr. S.P. Joshi,

Consultant, Tata Trusts

His reflections brought out the vital distinction between traditional quality and sustainability in quality. Through vivid examples — from vehicles that meet specifications yet pollute society, to Tata Motors’ pioneering initiatives in planting thousands of trees around its foundry, eliminating hazardous processes well ahead of regulations, and investing in renewable energy — he illustrated that true quality goes far beyond compliance. It must safeguard society, protect the environment, and serve future generations.

His articulation of the core principles of sustainability in quality — customer focus, social responsibility, continuous improvement, and leadership — provided the audience with a clear and actionable roadmap. His recollections of Mr. J.R.D. Tata’s visit were deeply moving, reminding everyone that true leadership is rooted in genuine care for people at the workplace.

During the interactive Q&A, Mr. Joshi that quality is not static but continually evolving. It calls for planning, innovation, indigenous capability, and, above all, a deep sense of responsibility toward society. Together, their insights demonstrated that resilience and sustainability in quality are inseparable — demanding not only technical excellence but also a moral commitment to people and the planet.

Mr. Sundaram Ramaswamy

Profile

Mr. Sundaram Ramaswamy,

Founder & MD, Aerospace Engineers Pvt Limited

His personal journey — from a polymer technologist to a pioneer in aerospace components — was truly inspiring. He shared how encouragement from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam opened new horizons and how his enterprise today supplies cockpit seals and precision parts not only to HAL, ISRO, and DRDO but also to global majors such as Boeing and Airbus. His call for the automotive ecosystem to explore opportunities in aerospace served as a powerful reminder of India’s immense untapped potential

He emphasized that quality, robust systems, and global certifications are the true gateways to entering the aerospace domain, and that sustainability in aviation depends on long-term reliability and lifecycle support.

His personal dream of manufacturing small aircraft in India — reflected both humility and vision, offering inspiration to a new generation of Indian entrepreneurs.
